Urban food environments and cultural adequacy: the (dis)assemblage of urban halal food environments in Muslim minority contexts

چکیده
Cultural adequacy has been largely neglected in urban food environment research. In times of multiculturalism, this is an obvious shortcoming. To address questions cultural adequacy, research needs to broaden its theoretical scope. The conventional approach environments as constituted through the presence or absence specific foods particular neighborhoods especially insufficient. This argument illustrated by empirical case studies examining halal Brasília (Brazil) and Frankfurt am Main (Germany). Drawing on assemblage thinking, we show that Muslim minority contexts are not determined mere but depend how understood. Furthermore, these outcomes complex assembling dis/reassembling practices, including crucial role invisibilization foods. Invisibilization, turn, driven market logics, entrepreneurial fear prejudices, regulations disregard Muslims’ needs. Invisibilization therefore likely disassemble numerous other contexts. Findings imply thinking helps unpack societal relations bring about culturally (in)adequate environments, so would benefit from taking it board.

Validation of 3 Food Outlet Databases: Completeness and Geospatial Accuracy in Rural and Urban Food Environments
Despite interest in the built food environment, little is known about the validity of commonly used secondary data. The authors conducted a comprehensive field census identifying the locations of all food outlets using a handheld global positioning system in 8 counties in South Carolina (2008-2009). Secondary data were obtained from 2 commercial companies, Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. (D&B) (Short Hi...

متن کاملTopology of Urban Environments
This paper introduces a practical approach to constructing a hybrid 3D metrical–topological model of a university campus or other extended urban region from labeled 2D floor plan geometry. An exhaustive classification of adjacency types is provided for a typical infrastructure, including roads, walkways, green-space, and detailed indoor spaces. We extend traditional lineal techniques to 2D open...
متن کاملAnthropogenic food provisioning and immune phenotype: Association among supplemental food, body condition, and immunological parameters in urban environments
Direct or indirect supplemental feeding of free-ranging animals occurs worldwide, resulting in significant impacts on population density or altered demographic processes. Another potential impact of increased energy intake from supplemental feeding is altered immunocompetence. As immune system maintenance is energetically costly, there may be trade-offs between immune responses and other energy...
